Island Hopping with Dee teaser

Villa Tour Leader Dee lets us know about her favourite island destinations!

A year in the life of a villa Tour Leader.

Tasmania and Norfolk Island
The year is young, and it is time to step out to two favourite islands - Tasmania and Norfolk Islands.
Each sharing a ‘bloody’ history with tales of convicts and murder and mayhem.  Both having dramatic coastline and expanses of rolling green.  Tourism is high on the economic agenda, but neither island making you feel like a wallet or another number. Charming hosts, delectable local produce and artisans sharing iconic souvenirs.

Mauritius and Reunion Islands
Next, two beautiful islands that are an hours flight apart - yet hemispheres apart in culture and heritage.  Mauritius and Reunion Islands sit amongst the Mascarenhas Archipelago.  Indigenous peoples, imported slaves,  indentured workers and European overseers have all provided influence and unique flavour to these distinct islands. Instantly recognisable mountains, flows of red hot lava, beaches of cooled black basalt or coral sands, endemic flora and fauna and fables of long since extinct creatures. Linguistic blends, sensual dance and rhythmic music entrance the visitor to either island.

King and Flinders Islands
The circle is almost complete with visits to two islands off the northern coast of Tasmania - Australia’s own King and Flinders Islands.  King Island communities produce some of the worlds most delectable cheeses.  Stress free cows delivering rich creamy milk, triple cream Brie, can one be more decadent? Only with lobster straight from the sea.  Flinders Island is a beautiful contrast of craggy mountains and silky white sandy beaches, enormous rounded granite boulders splashed with rich orange lichens contrast with aquamarine waters. Picnics on the beach where locals maintain (and use) the ‘clean your own BBQ kits’ dotted around the island.  Oh, and if you have ever wondered what ‘mutton bird’ and wallaby tastes like - Flinders Island is your opportunity.

So there we are, a year in the life of a villa Tour Leader, and that is only the islands!  Then there are the mainland destinations. But that is a story for another day...
